Birdweather PUC - Bat Edition

The Birdweather PUC - Bat edition is a step up from the BirdWeather PUC (Portable Universal Codec) a bioacoustic recording device powered by AI to automatically identify birds in real time and store them on an integrated microSD card. The PUC features dual microphones, WiFi/BLE, GPS, environmental sensors, and a built-in neural engine, all within a strong, weatherproof casing. The Bat Edition has the additional capability to automatically tune in to the ultrasonic echolocation calls made by bats that cannot be heard by humans without specialized equipment. This recorder makes those sounds visible and audible, it listens continuously and autmaticaly analyses what it hears, revealing the bat activity in your garden, local nature park or even on the streets.

The PUC connects to the BirdWeather artificial neural network to monitor bird vocalizations globally through over 2000 active audio stations. It automatically records and identifies bat calls and bird sounds, adding them to a digital library of over 6000 species (including frogs, squirrels and many other species), aiding conservation efforts and global studies. The mobile app and web dashboard work together with the PUC, enabling users to learn more about their own visitors, and listen to birds around the world.

Weather Recording:

The PUC’s environmental sensors, including Temperature, Humidity, Pressure, Air Quality, tVOC, CO2, and a Spectral Light Sensor, also allow you track local weather conditions.

How to enjoy your PUC:

The PUC can be used in your garden as a backyard acoustic station uploading all detections in real time. You can use it on the go, hiking or biking so you can explore and enjoy your recordings once you’re home. It can also be used for research, storing all of your data in a simple CSV on its built-in microSD card.

Batteries:

The PUC works with any type of AA battery (Alkaline or Lithium). The device automatically reports the voltage to the BirdWeather app, allowing you to keep an eye on battery life. You can also use a standard 5V USB-C to keep your PUC powered continuously, though its worth noting that this does not charge the batteries – if you are using rechargeable batteries, you will need an external charger. It can also be powered by a solar panel for extended power in the field.

Privacy:

In the interest of privacy, BirdWeather will automatically remove any soundscape wherein it detects a human vocalisation. In addition, you can at any point use the BirdWeather mobile application to temporarily disable the PUC and stop it from uploading sound recordings from the BirdWeather server, this takes effect as soon as you press the button.
