Fauna Hypogaea Pedemontana: Grotte e Ambienti Sotteranei del Piemonte e della Valled'Aost [Hypogaean Fauna of the Foothills: Caves and Underground Environments of Piedmont and the Aosta Valley]

This volume presents the results of the decades-long research conducted by the authors on the underground fauna of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta in northwestern Italy. These very particular forms of life are treated with reference to the conditions of the different underground environments in which they live: natural caves, artificial cavities and the Superficial Underground Environment (or Milieu Souterrain Superficiel, MSS). The catalogue, which constitutes the heart of this volume, lists approximately 12,000 faunal records, for a total of 865 animal species recorded in 1,260 census locations, corresponding to 958 caves, 256 artificial cavities and 46 stations of the Underground Surface Environment. In the final part of the volume, an extensive zoogeographic treatment of the underground fauna of the two regions, its peculiarities and origins is developed. The iconographic aspect is particularly rich and represented by about 3,600 original colour photographs, both of the collection locations and of the most significant troglobitic species of the investigated area.

In questo volume sono presentati i risultati delle ricerche pluridecennali condotte degli Autori sulla fauna sotterranea del Piemonte e della Valle d’Aosta. Queste particolarissime forme di vita sono trattate in riferimento alle condizioni dei diversi ambienti sotterranei in cui vivono: le grotte naturali, le cavità artificiali e l’Ambiente Sotterraneo Superficiale (MSS). Nel catalogo, che costituisce il cuore del volume, sono elencati circa 12.000 record faunistici, per un totale di 865 specie animali segnalate in 1.260 località censite, corrispondenti a 958 grotte, 256 cavità artificiali e 46 stazioni di Ambiente Sotterraneo Superficiale. Nella parte finale del volume è sviluppata un’estesa trattazione zoogeografica della fauna sotterranea delle due regioni, delle sue peculiarità e origini. L’aspetto iconografico è particolarmente ricco e rappresentato da circa 3.600 fotografie originali a colori, sia delle località di raccolta, sia delle più significative specie troglobie dell’area indagata.
