From Genes to Cells

Recent decades have seen tremendous progress in our understanding of cellular and molecular biology, with molecular genetics in particular having a significant impact on our lives. Surprisingly, the explosion in information has actually simplified the field, and areas previously considered disparate can now be seen as part of a relatively simple pattern. This introductory text to modern cell biology addresses these issues, providing a concise, yet comprehensive look at the present knowledge in the field.

Written by active researchers and teachers at the cutting edge of biological research, From Genes to Cells describes the essentials of molecular and genetic components of cells. Bringing together diverse areas – from genetics to neuroscience – the authors tear down artificial boundaries between disciplines, and offer real-world examples from newly discovered phenomena. The following topics are covered:
- The cell under the microscope, including the ultrastructure of cells, cell movement, and cell division
- Genetics and molecular biology, including the biochemical structure of DNA and RNA, "DNA makes RNA makes protein," Mendelian genetics, gene mapping, mutation, and genetic engineering
- Biochemistry, including the structure of proteins, enzyme kinetics, metabolism, and the synthesis of macromolecules
- Physiology, including resting and action potentials, intracellular messengers, and communication between cells

Accessible and easy-to-read throughout, From Genes to Cells follows the successful Wiley-Liss "short course" type format, and can be used as a basis for an undergraduate course in cell biology. Its individual chapters reflect real lecture type presentations, and include many 2-color drawings, highlighted key words, and boxed summaries that reinforce key concepts.

From Genes to Cells is essential for students, teachers, and researchers in molecular biology, cellular biology, and genetics; and for anyone who would like to keep abreast of a fascinating and ever-changing field.
