Halophyte Uses in Different Climates I

This volume contains the proceedings of the 3rd seminar of the EU Concerted Action Group IC 18CT 96-0055, held in Florence, Italy, on 20 July 1998.

This group focuses on the sustainable utilisation of halophytes (= salt-tolerant plants), including the development of cash crops out of halophytic plants currently not or little used. This usually requires irrigation with saline wastewater, natural brackish water, or even seawater. The group tries to assess all plant species occurring in saline environments and select from these prospective candidates for a variety of applications.

The papers presented at this seminar are contributions to the analysis of environmental parameters and requirements important for the use and/or development of halophytes for potential utilisation. Two books resulted from this meeting. This first volume contains papers dealing with ecological and ecophysiological topics, while the second companion volume mainly contains papers dealing with irrigation technology, halophyte growth studies, and their use as animal feed.
