Les Ammonites de la Carrière de la Grande Palisse [The Ammonites of the Grande Palisse Quarry] (2-Volume Set)
A palaeontological study project focusing on Bajocian and Aalenian fauna was launched in 2013 at the Grande Palisse quarry in Nanteuil, a commune of the Deux-Sèvres department in western France. The richness and diversity of the collected fossils led to the on-site construction of a palaeontological museum dedicated to education and scientific research. This 2-volume set gives a graphic documentation of the site's ammonite fauna, one volume containing 492 pages of text and figures, the other 245 plates with colour photos.
The study covered 78 beds spanning a sediment thickness of 18.5 meters. By using the collected ammonites (suborders Ammonitina, Phylloceratina, Lytoceratinae) to establish the geological zonation of the quarry, the site enabled the study of the uppermost Toarcian (4 beds, 102 specimens), the Aalenian (19 beds, 397 specimens), and the Bajocian (55 beds, 777 specimens). This resulted in a collection of 1,304 ammonites distributed across 7 superfamilies (Hammatoceratoidea, Haploceratoidea, Stephanoceratoidea, Perisphinctoidea, Spiroceratoidea, Phylloceratoidea, and Lytoceratoidea), 13 families (Graphoceratidae, Hammatoceratidae, Sonniniidae, Strigoceratidae, Lissoceratidae, Oppelliidae, Otoitidae, Sphaeroceratidae, Stephanoceratidae, Perisphinctidae, Spiroceratidae, Phylloceratidae, and Lytoceratidae), 46 genera, and 203 species and morphotypes.
A clear boundary between the uppermost Toarcian and the basal Aalenian provided new data on the coexistence of the final Pleydellia and the earliest Leioceras found together at the base of the Aalenian. The subsequent diversification of Leioceras was observed up to the end of the Bifidatum Zone. The final zones of the Aalenian were also well characterised. The base of the Bajocian was characterised by the presence of residual pockets of ferruginous oolites; the lower part yielded a Graphoceratidae fauna typical of the latest Aalenian, while the upper part contained a fauna typical of the Discites Zone. These were followed by the Ovale and Laeviuscula Zones, marked by the disappearance of the Hammatoceratidae and the strong emergence of the Sonniniidae. The Propinquans Zone proved relatively poor in fossils. The Humphriesianum Zone was poor at its base but very rich subsequently, featuring an explosion of Stephanoceratoidea. The Upper Bajocian saw the appearance of the Leptosphinctinae, Cadomitinae, Garantianinae, and Spiroceratoidea.
Associated fauna (predominantly other cephalopods, bivalves, gastropods, crustaceans, brachiopods, rare reptiles and sea urchins, scleractinian corals, fish teeth, foraminifera, ostracods, etc.) was also collected and is currently being evaluated.
